Netting is one of the most dangerous hazards for wild birds. It is commonly used to protect fruit, vegetables, or ponds, but unfortunately birds can become tangled very easily.
Once trapped, birds panic and struggle. This often leads to broken wings, torn skin, damaged feathers, and severe shock.
This is always urgent.
What to do
• Approach slowly and calmly
• Cover the bird gently with a towel if possible
• Carefully cut the netting away
• Never pull the bird free
Pulling can cause serious injuries, including broken bones and severe tissue damage.
Take your time and remove the netting piece by piece. Sometimes small scissors or nail scissors are helpful.
Once free
• Place the bird in a ventilated box
• Keep warm, dark and quiet
• Contact a wildlife rescue
Even if the bird looks okay, injuries may not be immediately visible. Circulation can be affected where netting has tightened around wings or legs. Shock is also very common.
Preventing netting injuries
If you use netting in your garden
• Keep netting tight and secure
• Avoid loose draped netting
• Use wildlife friendly alternatives where possible
• Check netting daily
A quick check each day can prevent a tragedy.
Thank you for helping when a bird needed you most 💚🐦
